About the Seneca Nation of Indians

The Seneca Nation of Indians is one of six nations that comprise the Iroquois Confederacy and whose aboriginal territories encompassed what is now Western New York.

The Seneca Nation historically controlled trade through and protected the Western territories of the Confederacy, represented symbolically as a Longhouse, and thereby assumed the reference "Keeper of the Western Door."

Currently, the Seneca Nation occupies sovereign land set aside by the Treaty of Canandaigua in 1794. The Seneca Nation has over 7,300 enrolled members and holds title to four territories in Western New York, specifically, the Cattaraugus, Allegany, Oil Spring and Niagara Falls territories.

The Seneca Nation also has the unique distinction of being the only sovereign nation to host a U.S. city (Salamanca) within its boundaries. The Seneca Nation continues to support its own people and the surrounding communities with a variety of cultural, educational and economic efforts, including Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, Seneca Allegany Casino, and Seneca Gaming & Entertainment in Salamanca and Irving.

Through the Enterprises of the Nation, revenues are generated that provide necessary services and programs to all tribal members, especially its youth and elder population. The Seneca Nation endeavors to preserve its rich cultural heritage and welcomes the opportunity to share it with the global community.
